Earth Day is an annual event, celebrated on April 22, on which day events worldwide are held to demonstrate support for environmental protection. It was first celebrated in 1970, and is now coordinated globally by the Earth Day Network, and celebrated in more than 192 countries each year.

In addition Earth Day Network launched the A Billion Acts of Green campaign in 2010, Earth Day’s 40th anniversary, with the goal of registering one billion actions in advance of the United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development (Rio+20) in June 2012.

Earth Day Network has made participating in Earth Day even easier by providing ways you can help our planet:

  • The Climate Petition – Sign up! Join the largest climate petition to save the world. Tell local, national and international leaders to phase out carbon. Take Action!
  • Support Environmental Education – Did you know that Congress is currently in the process of setting the federal budget for the fiscal year 2015? Tell Congress to include funding for environmental education. Learn More!
  • Reduce Energy Consumption – Almost half of the greenhouse gas emissions in the US come from the energy we use to power our homes and our cars. Take the pledge to reduce your energy consumption today! Learn More!
  • Create Art to Raise Awareness – A Call for Submissions to “Footing the Bill: Art and our Ecological Footprint” Learn More!

We want to know: what ideas do you have to help participate in Earth Day this year? Tell us about them in the comments, and we’ll feature some of the best comments in a future post. Let’s keep the kindness spreading and everyday should be Earth Day!
